Zoe's Story

Empowered by CBT

I was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) last year and was taught about the condition.

Due to experiencing more very bad trauma and difficulties in my life, I needed to use the Poole, Purbeck and East Dorset Steps to Wellbeing Service. I had a very good therapist who suggested that I would benefit from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). At first, I thought, "What is this going to do??", "I know that this will not help!" however, I was feeling very depressed and anxious at that time and feeling detached from society and life. But I was wrong, as it has changed my life!

I have been very lucky with my therapist; he has been amazing and helped me to learn CBT. After about three sessions of CBT, I could feel a change in myself, my life, and my confidence started to come back. My anxiety and depression was starting to disappear and I again felt part of society and feeling myself and getting my life back.

CBT is all about feeling and feeling the thoughts you have. You can never stop the "movie" of your mind going round and round, or over and over, but when you learn to not try and control your mind, and feel the thoughts, and go deep within that feeling and do not fight or surrender to them, you learn everything is ok and after 5-10 minutes, the thoughts move on and you feel ok again.

My point of view is that others expect miracles from therapists, counsellors etc. and want them to heal them. They are definitely a part of your healing process and guide and empower you as much as they can, but you have to also help yourself and be willing to look within and try CBT. Because, if you put in the hard work, and try your best, the result is a miracle!

For me, after being with the Steps to Wellbeing Team and having CBT for a short space of time, it has been a miracle and my life is now so great, and I am happy. Of course, I have bad days and down days, or hours, but knowing CBT now, I still feel ok and content. It is like my body and mind naturally "does" Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and I know everything is ok, and I am lucky to be alive!
